The ILM Level 5 Certificate and Diploma in Effective Coaching & Mentoring

An ILM Level 5 Coaching and Mentoring qualification provides a comprehensive level of knowledge and skills in coaching and mentoring within a workplace or other similar context with the focus on coaching/mentoring managers, supervisors and team leaders.

It is more extensive than the level 3 coaching and mentoring qualifications, in both knowledge content and required coaching/mentoring hours.Trainee coaches for this ILM qualification could be employees, freelancers or volunteers and will gain both competence and confidence in operating as an effective coach/mentor. They should have some supervisory or management experience.

Learners embarking on any ILM qualification will require time and commitment to undertake the activities required to achieve the accreditation.

Who is it for?

This qualification is designed for managers and those who have responsibility for coaching/mentoring as part of their daily role.

The level 5 is also suitable for those who wish to develop into the role or who aspire to be freelance, independent coaches and/or mentors.

You will get the skills, knowledge, tools and confidence to coach and mentor people, with an additional focus on the managerial organisational context.

What do the Certificate and Diploma Cover?

The Level 5 Certificate and Diploma both include three units (modules) as outlined below covering knowledge and practical application:


Understanding Skills, Principles and Practice of Effective Coaching and Mentoring within an organisational context

Undertaking Effective Coaching or Mentoring within an organisational context (18 hours Certificate/54 hours Diploma)

Reviewing Own Ability as a Coach or Mentor within an Organisational Context

Course Delivery

We offer a combination of routes which include a fully taught model of workshops and blended learning models with a combination of workshops, e-learning and webinars. We can and do deliver the whole programme virtually, using MS Teams or Zoom.

Typically, the level 5 fully taught programme would include 5-6 half-day workshops or the equivalent in 1-2-1 tutor lead sessions.

All learners have an ILM Qualification Induction Session, receive a course textbook plus other materials including our bespoke E-learning programme, supported by regular 1-2-1 tutorials and coaching supervision throughout the programme.

Assessment Activities

Trainee coaches work to achieve three units, which includes a written knowledge assignment, a reflective coaching diary documenting coaching practice with supporting evidence from coachees and QED supervisor, tracking your progress through observation, supervision and reviews.

Qualification Costs

Open courses start from £2395 + Vat per head for Level 5 Certificate virtual delivery model and increase for the Diploma and in-person delivery models, fees are inclusive of ILM registration and all programme components.

Progression to other Qualifications

After completing this qualification, you may wish to progress onto the Level 7 Certificate or Diploma for Executive and Senior Level Coaches and Mentors.
